Anticipatory Set
Prior to the lesson, have students engage in a discussion regarding their personal encounters with the digital space. In what ways are they involved with the internet? How often are they using social media? What do they think it means to be a digital citizenship? In what ways do they think they are being a digital citizen? In what ways are they not?
Class Readings
Article that defines digital citizenship
Article that explores the complexity of digital citizenship
Through the first article, students will have an understanding of digital citizenship and the ways it is defined. The second article provides a long list of what students need to know in digital world. This will make students aware of how complex the digital world is.
Youtube
Video that goes over the nine elements of digital citizenship
This video is in-depth but also easy to understand due to the drawings and the "cartoon feel" the video has. There are very important discussions on communication, literacy, and etiquette, so students must connect this video with the class readings and their assignment.

Assignment/Demonstration of Learning
After learning about digital citizenship and effective ways to navigate the digital space, students will demonstrate their knowledge through a group project. Students will get into groups of four and use Google slides to do a presentation on digital citizenship. To ensure that students are connecting their life experiences with what they learned in class, students must find one form of social media or online space and explore digital citizenship in that specific perspective. If students choose Instagram, they will examine the elements of digital citizenship in the space of Instagram. How does one reflect digital citizenship on Instagram? How does one go against digital citizenship on Instagram? Students must provide three examples of communication, literacy, and etiquette in the social media platform of their choosing. To conclude, they must lead a class discussion time after their presentation regarding a current event. They must formulate the discussion around the current event and digital citizenship.
I liked your idea of the anticipatory discussion prior to the students delving into the actual work. The way you explained what the students should learn from each article and YouTube video sets great expectations. I liked how you used the Students Will Be Able To as a way to discuss your objectives, it makes them very specific and to the point.
ReplyDeleteEric,
ReplyDeleteA really strong lesson plan that really hits a lot of the key components for a quality high school lesson. Would love to have you actually give this to a class and then reflect on potential changes for the next time.
